Western SD road trip

A couple weeks ago we drove across South Dakota for a weekend road trip with Grandma and Grandpa B. We stopped in Mitchell at the Corn Palace, had a picnic by the river in Chamberlain, and saw some favorite attractions at Wall Drug.

A Wall Drug must see: the animatronic, piano-playing gorilla
We all stayed together in a lovely cabin at Powder House Lodge in Keystone, SD.  Saturday morning we had a delicious breakfast at the lodge restaurant before visiting Mount Rushmore.  We hiked around and toured the visitor center.  It was beautiful weather for the whole weekend.

After a picnic back at our cabin, we drove south to Custer state park.  The drive took longer than we expected, but was beautiful.   We drove on a wildlife loop and saw lots of bison right at the roadside, deer, burros, and prairie dogs.  It was pretty exciting to see the big bison crossing the road.  We saw some fighting and we saw some babies nursing.  Being able to fit all 8 of us in the van makes trips like this a lot more fun!

There were prairie dogs here, but they were too tiny to show up well in the photo!
We drove through the Needles and hiked a little at Lake Sylvan.

That evening we at supper at the lodge, Papa and the older three went swimming in the outdoor pool, and we drove back to Mount Rushmore for the evening flag ceremony.

Sunday morning we had a fathers' day and Papa's birthday breakfast before saying goodbye to Grandma and Grandpa.  They were headed on to Colorado and we were headed home.

We went to church and had lunch in Rapid City before driving to the Badlands National Park.  We drove through the park and hiked around a little.  We stayed longer than we expected and could have stayed even longer!

Headed home - so much room in the van!
A stop for supper on the long drive.
